Let's Make a Deal

Bean,

I was lying in bed this morning feeling you dance around my belly, realizing how much your body and mine have changed this last month. Your movements are no longer little, quick boxing jabs, but more fluid modern dance moves. You also do a lot more reacting to the foods I eat. Though you like your hot sauces as much as I do.

Doctors' guesses are that you now weigh three to four pounds and stretch a good 16-17 inches vertically from my belly button downward. That's right, it seems that you have already figured out that you need to travel head first out the exit during your evacuation.

As for me, well I am getting bigger. Not as big as some would expect or have experienced themselves with only two months to go. In fact, one of our friends who is due almost three months after me compares in girth.

My days seem longer. I have found myself frequently steeling naps on the couch at work. Knowing that your arrival in April will rob me of much sleep, I have no guilt about sleeping in when I can and catching cat naps when my eyes seem too heavy to perform as they should.

We are doing just fine, baby. If you do your part to continue to grow strong and healthy I will do mine. Is it a deal?

Love,
Mom

Family and a Farm

Dear Bean,

You met your relatives last week. Or at least, they all feel a little closer to you. Your aunt Jenny talked to you in my stomach and sang you silly songs ("Leaving on a Jet Plane" to name one). Both my parents felt your strong kick. And my grandmother just grinned from ear to ear as she circled my belly with the palm of her hand. Everyone can't wait to meet you.

Your dad and I loaded wood from the barn to the cellar at my dad's house and said our hello's to the newest members of "Leverett Farm:" the guinea hens. I can see you chasing the stupid birds across the several acres of backyard once you are on your feet. I see you also helping my dad in the garden, planting flowers with Christin and enjoying many other simple pleasures of the country. This is sure to be a special place to you.

These next three months are sure to fly by. Your dad is moving his business to a new space; we are going to make you a special bedroom upstairs across the hall from ours; we are going to take a few classes to better prepare for being parents; we are going to buy a new car for you to ride in, and more. Each day I seem to be a little larger, a physical reminder that you are growing and will soon be here. (Last week, just before reaching the third trimester, I bought my first set of maternity clothes) There isn't a moment I don't think about you - maybe that's because you seem to be in a continual state of aerobic exercise inside my tummy! So this is the moment of no return. Forever more on my thoughts, forever a focus in our family to love and nurture.

We love you.

Baby on Board

No one wants to push around the pregnant lady on the flag football field. Thanks for the advantage, baby! Go blue team!

Baby's First Photo

Ok. So this isn't really the baby. But, I thought it was precious when JJ snuck our Lego family onto the bedroom dresser last night. Funny how we haven't changed out of our wedding get-up in the last year and a half.

The baby really will have his/her first portrait taken next week. Keep your eyes peeled.

Sorry to everyone who has asked for belly pictures. A freak of nature, I suppose, but baby's pushing out only a bump so far. Check back in with me in another month.

16 going on 17

Dear Bean,

We saw your favorite nurse practitioner today. She says you are growing fast and that I will soon have to say goodbye to my jeans and other restrictive wear. I believe her. Just this last week I have noticed a little pouch of a belly that wasn’t there before. She reckons you are about 7 inches long, and we heard your heart beat, which is going 152 beats a minute. Not bad, kid.

As you approach 17 weeks, the question now is, can I stay in my Boston Red Sox sweats forever, or do I actually have to look for some new clothes?

No. 1 Dad

Baby,

You haven’t had the chance to meet your father yet, benefit from his wise counsel, or cuddle up with him on the couch. But, let me tell you now how lucky you are to have a dad as kind, loving, patient, honest, hard working and honorable as you do.

You know by now that these last few months the hormones you’ve ignited within me have been making me pretty ill. Finding foods that agree with me - us - has been a challenge. So has staying up much past 8:30 at night, getting up in the morning without rushing to the bathroom and having enough energy to do my work, spend time with your dad, and on occasion a friend or two.

Through all of this, your dad has been patient with my inability to do much around the house – I admit it, I’m something of a sloth these days; he has made many trips to the store for one or two food “needs,” which I know isn’t his favorite thing to do; he takes care of me in every way when I am feeling my worst ; he has dry cereal and orange juice at my bedside every morning before I wake up; he hasn’t commented once about how I sleep an average of 11 hours a night or how when I am really feeling bad I can’t get myself to take a shower. Your dad has shown me more love than I knew was possible to give these last four and a half years. I can only imagine how much he will love special, little you, too.

We are two lucky kids!

About the photo: Your dad sells video games and sometimes he likes to be a goof in the pics he puts on his gaming blog. Oh! So much for you to learn; so much for you to love!
